Goldbeck earns DI Defensive Player of the Year honors
Charlotte, NC - Kansas City Kansas' Gehrig Goldbeck earns the 2023 NJCAA DI Baseball Defensive Player of the Year.
Head Coach Matt Goldbeck on Goldbeck- "It is an honor for Gehrig to win such a prestigious award. As with all awards, it is an accumulation of several things that go into it to be able to receive such a high honor, from having great strength and conditioning coaches to having a pitching staff that induced a lot of ground balls. He had a special group of assistant coaches, along with an infield group that pushed each other day in and day out, a good double play partner, and a first baseman that saved him some errors. Gehrig did his part by having an elite work ethic and showing some toughness to play through a season-long injury. The coaching staff looks forward to seeing Gehrig continue to grow as a player and we look forward to having him back for his sophomore year.
Goldbeck was recently named to the 2023 ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove team with his .974 fielding percentage. Goldbeck had 146 assists and 17 double plays this season, sitting fifth in the nation in assists. He also had an impressive year at the plate with a .354 batting average that included 70 hits, 6 doubles, and 6 triples.
Athletic Director Greg McVay on Goldbeck- "We are very proud that Gehrig has been selected as the NJCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year. He is an outstanding baseball player, an accomplished student, and a true leader to his teammates. I can't think of anyone more deserving of this incredible honor."
Goldbeck just finished his freshman year at Kansas City Kansas and will be returning to play for the Blue Devils next season.
