Joliet Uses Strong Second Half to Surge Past Rochester for the NJCAA Men's DIII Basketball Title
DELHI, N.Y. - After placing second in 2005 and 2008, Joliet (Ill.) made their third appearance in the NJCAA DIII Men's Basketball Championship Game a memorable one by defeating Rochester (Minn.) 94-82 on March 13 in Delhi, N.Y. It is the Wolves' first NJCAA men's basketball title since 1994 when then-coach Pat Klingler and JJC won the Division II championship.
Joliet used an explosive second half to lift them to the title. Trailing 58-50 with 13:24 remaining in the game, Lennell Pierce hit a jumper to put Joliet up 60-50 with just over nine minutes to play. Pierce's basket was part of 14-0 run that propelled Joliet to a 64-58 lead.
Pierce, who came of the bench, scored a team-high 21 points in the game. He also contributed seven rebounds and three assists.
Tournament MVP Brian Bradley tallied 19 points for Joliet and nine rebounds. Jon Bartlett added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting and was an All-Tournament selection.
Joliet head coach Joe Khun was named Coach of the Tournament.
Rochester owned a 42-39 halftime lead by virtue of shooting 8-of-13 from 3-point range. Brandon Milde led Rochester with 23 points and eight rebounds while Shiron Williams had 17 points. Demetrius Williams had 13 points and was the lone Rochester player to make eight-member All-Tournament team.
The 2010 NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship was held for the last time at SUNY Delhi. SUNY Delhi has been home of the championship for the past 20 years. The tournament will now move to the campus of Sullivan County Community College (N.Y.) for the next three years.
