Lincoln Wins First National Championship in Men's Basketball
DANVILLE, Ill. - One year after coming up just short with a third place finish, Lincoln College (Ill.) made it back to the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship and won the program's first national championship with a 71-60 win over Cincinnati State on March 20 in Danville, Ill.
The Lynx held the Surge of Cincy State to a tournament low 60 points due to great on the ball defense. The Surge shot just 3-for-15 from three-point range and Lincoln out-rebounded their opponents 37-21.
Lincoln College pulled ahead for good with a 10-0 run late in the second half, kick-started by a go-ahead 3-pointer from sophomore Kenyon Smith. The spurt concluded with a basket by freshman DeMarius
Sumrell that left the Lynx ahead 65-57 with 3:55 to play.
A tip-in from 6-foot-11 center Kiel Turpin gave the Lynx a nine-point advantage with 50 seconds left, effectively sealing the title.
Tournament MVP Kiel Turpin of Lincoln led all players with 21 points while DeMarius Sumrell, an All-Tournament selection, scored 18 points. Kenyon Smith finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Lynx.
The Lynx finished their championship season with a record of 30-6.
Illya Glover was the leading scorer for Cincinnati State with 17 points. Rayshawn Goins and James Miller were selected to the All-Tournament Team for the Surge.
